This weekend I had a birthday party with more than 5,000 of my best buds.
To celebrate my 5oth (that’s Five Zero), my daughter and I traveled to my childhood home of Knoxville, TN to participate in a Color Me Rad 5K run. Or, as the emcee said, it was more of a walk. Very few of the racers tried for a personal record, unless it was for how much colored powder their clothes, hair and ears could hold.
This event, one of dozens set around the country, benefitted the Knoxville Children’s Hospital. Throughout the course, volunteer color bombers pelted us with handfuls of colored powered, and at two color stations hosed us down with high-pressure streams of liquid yellow and green. By the end of the route, we were all literally tie-dyed.
Even after 3o minutes of vigorous scrubbing, I still have splotches of blue and yellow on my back that won’t rub off, and apparently I don’t clean my ears as well as I thought, since my daughter pointed out at dinner that I still had purple powder lurking there.
I’m kicking 50′s arse and having a great time doing it.

This is hysterical, and I HAVE to do this. Thank you for sharing the link with me!!!
That looks like amazing fun! What a great way to spend your birthday. Wonder if I can find one of these to do with my own daughter?
Happy birthday! You are absolutely FFANTASTIC and so is this event. I love that you come out of it with a custom T-shirt.
I. Love. This!!! Great shots. Fun event. Amazing memories.
Ah, too funny, I didn’t know they had events like this. I love the powders in the air picture! Way to go and happy birthday!
Oh my goodness! Great cause, and I’m proud of you whether you walked OR ran, but me wonders how the inside of your LUNGS look after walk/running through all that chalky colored powder!!??
Look at you! SO rocking 50! Happy Birthday!!!
That’s AWESOME. Happy birthday!
I’ve been catching your updates on Twitter – Happy Birthday! 5 0 eh? Hmm. I am just one shy of that milestone. But as they say (and I love them) it is all a state of mind! Hugs to you! Looks like you had fun!
You go girl!! That looks like so much fun!
Happy 50th!!
That looks like fun and I’m a fan of colors :) But… does it hurt getting into your eyes??
Not at all. It’s just colored cornstarch, and the bombers try to avoid your face. Most of that was at the end when we threw bombs over our heads.

Happy 50th. Looks like a colourful way to spend your birthday. Enjoy the next 50 because they are all good.
Oh wow, it gives me feel of Holi that we celebrate here in India
SO great. 50 looks awesome on you!
Holy cow, you are one colorful lady. It looks like you had a blast.
I hope I look that good at 50.
Seriously!
Happy 50th — what a great way to celebrate
That looks like so much fun! If the pace is really slow, I might even be able to keep up!
You have to go slower to get more color! We only ran the last few yards to the finish. Most everyone was walking.
