Standing in the surf, searching the horizon for familiar sails, I wrap his old black seal coat tight around my shoulders. Sheets of rain and driving wind whip my hair from my scarf, stinging my eyes. Salt from the sea mix with my tears.
Waves lash my legs, and wash the sand from beneath me. I’m losing ground and hope.
Seagulls sit vigil with me, heads turned, bills tucked protectively under wings. Their silent prayers for a safe return mingle with mine.
Above the roar of the ocean, I strain to hear my beloved’s voice once again murmur my name.
The 100 Word Challenge, a writing prompt created by Velvet Verbosity, takes a single theme to tell a story in only 100 words ~ no more, no less. This week’s theme is ‘Murmur.’

Just beautiful… poetic, rhythmic, soothing and well done.
New England seaside houses used to be built with Widow’s Walks – just for this purpose. Too many lovers lost at sea. Well done Tara!
Barbara – my house growing up had a widow’s watch. I thought the same thing when reading this :)
The seal coat is a perfect touch. I hope this mariner isn’t lost at sea, but I fear from the watcher’s lack of hope that he may be gone into the drink.
Beautifully visual and oh so sad. Excellent writing.
“Salt from the sea mix with my tears.” and “seagulls sit vigil with me” , were two such beautiful lines, such wonderful images that I almost touched my face to see if I was crying and I heard the cry of those sky/sea birds.
this was so touching and sad, my prayers are that he comes back. Love the picture too.
