Driving since midnight

The impromptu picnic was his idea, a rare moment alone with her dad. He spread a blanket under “their” tree overlooking the river. Her favorite sandwiches, peanut butter and dill pickles, were packed along with thermoses of Hawaiian Punch and Sprite.

“I don’t understand,” her voice cracked. Fighting against her tears, she was shocked to see her daddy’s eyes were wet too.

“Mommy had to go far away, but she loves you very much.” He avoided looking at his young daughter.

“She’s never coming back?” Pauley asked in a soft, scared voice.

“No, baby. It’s just you and me now.”

100 Word Song is a writing challenge from Lance based on a weekly music prompt. This week’s challenge is inspired by Ani Di Franco’s “Cloud Blood.”

A little snippet from the childhood of my favorite female hit man, Pauley.

  1. muuuuuuch different Pauley than the one in the hotel bathroom right now.

This is so important to see how she shut herself off from compassion and was able to kill.

Great piece and Leeroy is honored by it’s inclusion ijn 100 word song…

  2. okay, so I read this one, then I read you 100 words for swagger…and I got to say I don’t really see that Pauley thinks her mom died. I would judge by her response she sees that her mom “left”…unless there is more to the scene.

Regardless, love the back story. Keep em coming!

  3. This seems to be happening more and more often. I just met a man last Sunday who is raising his two kids and his step-daughter (the wife’s daughter from an earlier marriage) alone after the wife left. So sad.

    • I got a wonderful suggestion from Lance, and have been working out bios for my characters in this story. I plan to do more of these vignettes as we go along.

So, tell me what you really think:
